Mastery Of Your Dental Care

Dr J Basrai

Dental decay is far too common. The teeth, though very strong normally, are prone to decaying when they are not taken care of or when bacteria take over. At our office, we see many cases of decay occurring, but usually we can do something to prevent or reverse the problem. Do not wait to get treatment.

Why Does It Happen?

The most common cause of dental decay is the build-up of bacteria. Bacteria create a stick material called plaque that covers the teeth. This material leads to inflammation of the gums. However, the build-up also destroys the enamel - the hard surface material of the tooth. Over time, this leads to a virtual rotting of the tooth.

This often happens because of poor dental hygiene. If you are not brushing your teeth every day at least twice, flossing and visiting the dentist for a dental cleaning every six months, you are prone to decay. Over time, this can be devastating.

Do I Have It?
When you come in for a dental appointment, we will work with you to determine if there is any decay present. This is first done with x-rays to determine if the root structure is at risk. We also have various tools, including a DIAGNOdent Laser. This laser allows us to detect the presence of decay occurring in a safe, fast method.

Most of the time, initial decay is hard to spot. You cannot see it from just looking in your mouth. However, over time, it will worsen significantly.

Why Should You Care?
Dental decay leads to tooth loss. If you do not want to wear dentures or have painful infections, you will need to take steps to minimize decay and to restore health to your smile.

What You Can Do?
At our office, we treat dental decay with various treatment options. We will work with you to determine if the tooth can be saved through cleanings and root planing. If removal of the tooth is necessary, we offer a variety of cosmetic treatment options to fix your smile. You do not have to suffer with decay. There are options available.
